Arthritis
treating with TCM
Arthritis refers to a group of diseases characterized by inflammation of the joints. It is one of the most common causes of joint pain and stiffness and can occur at any age. The symptoms of arthritis vary depending on the type of disease, but generally include pain, swelling, redness, and reduced mobility of the affected joints. In rheumatoid arthritis, the small joints of the hands and feet are primarily affected, while in osteoarthritis, larger joints such as the hips, knees, and spine are typically involved.
Arthritis can significantly impact the quality of life, as the painful symptoms can limit mobility and the ability to perform daily activities. In severe cases, permanent joint deformities can occur. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to slow the progression of the disease and alleviate symptoms.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), arthritis is associated with Bi Syndromes. Bi Syndrome is a general term for diseases with painful obstruction of Qi and blood in the meridians, joints, muscles, and tendons. The obstruction is caused by the invasion of wind, cold, heat, or dampness in the meridian system, especially when the body’s defensive or Wei Qi is weakened, or due to trauma, overexertion, dislocations, and sprains. This leads to the stagnation of Qi and blood in the joints, causing pain, swelling, inflammation, and, as a result, cartilage damage. Acupuncture can help relieve these stagnations, improving pain and promoting healing, while herbs assist in restoring the flow of blood and Qi.
