Lymphedema
treating with TCM
A lymphedema is a swelling caused by an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the tissues. This occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, preventing the normal drainage of lymph fluid. As a result, lymph builds up, leading to what is known as lymphatic congestion. The lymphatic system, which consists of lymph vessels and lymph nodes, plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s fluid balance and supporting the immune system.
Under normal conditions, fluid from the tissues is transported via the lymph vessels back into the bloodstream. However, when the lymphatic system is impaired, this process is disrupted, causing fluid to accumulate in the affected areas. This typically leads to visible and palpable swelling, most often in the arms or legs, but other parts of the body can also be affected.
Lymphedema can have various causes. A common form is primary lymphedema, which is usually hereditary and may develop during childhood or early adulthood. Secondary lymphedema occurs as a result of another condition, such as cancer, infection, or injury that damages the lymphatic system. Although lymphedema can be a chronic condition, it is important to note that symptoms vary from person to person—not everyone experiences the same severity. The impact on quality of life depends on several factors, including the extent of the swelling and the areas of the body affected.
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), lymphedema is often associated with deficient Qi, which is no longer strong enough to regulate and direct the flow of water. Weakness of the muscles and connective tissues is frequently a concurrent symptom. Acupuncture and/or moxibustion can be used to regulate Qi and facilitate the drainage of water. With Chinese herbal therapy, fluid stagnation can be resolved and eliminated. Additionally, herbal treatments can be used to strengthen Qi and muscles, thereby improving the body’s ability to manage and distribute fluids properly.
