Respiratory Diseases/Disorders
treating with TCM
Respiratory Diseases/Disorders affect both the upper and lower respiratory tracts and are among the most common reasons for doctor visits. These illnesses are often caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, but can also have a bacterial origin. The most common symptoms include cough, sore throat, runny nose, and sometimes fever.
Coughing is the primary symptom of many acute respiratory illnesses and serves as the body’s defense mechanism to clear foreign substances, mucus, or microbes from the airways. Acute cough often occurs as part of a cold or flu and can be accompanied by a stuffy nose, fatigue, and general discomfort. The cough may be dry or productive (with mucus).
Acute respiratory issues are based on a weakness of the so-called Wei Qi (the lung’s weakened immune system). Pathogenic factors, such as bacteria and viruses, can easily invade the body. Additionally, a weak spleen, often caused by dietary mistakes, may no longer be able to transform moisture properly. This results in the production of phlegm, which settles in the airways. The body uses coughing to expel this phlegm, which, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is referred to as ascending lung Qi. Appropriate nutrition, acupuncture, and herbal therapy help support the lungs in returning to normal function, clearing the phlegm, and directing the lung Qi downward.
