Post-stroke care
treating with TCM
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, leading to damage of brain cells. Post-stroke care is an essential part of the recovery process and plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for those affected. Following a stroke, patients may experience a range of physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments that require long-term support and care.
The symptoms left behind after a stroke depend on which region of the brain is affected. Common consequences include paralysis, speech difficulties, and cognitive impairments.
The main goal of post-stroke care is to support patients in regaining their independence and to minimize potential long-term effects. In many cases, recovery takes months or even years, as both the body and the brain need time to heal and adapt.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a stroke is referred to as a “Wind Stroke”, as it often strikes suddenly, much like a gust of wind. After a severe stroke—often accompanied by unconsciousness—serious symptoms may remain, including drastically impaired motor function such as hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body), slurred speech, and drooping of the mouth or eyelid.
According to TCM theory, these conditions may result from Qi deficiency and blood stasis, phlegm accumulation combined with wind, or a combination of wind-phlegm and stagnant blood blocking the orifices and meridians.
The first six months after a stroke are considered the most critical period for rehabilitation of functions such as speech, movement, and swallowing. During this time, acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, and lifestyle modifications can produce the most effective results and should ideally be initiated as early as possible.
Paralysis following a stroke can often be improved through targeted stimulation of the affected areas. Techniques such as acupuncture, Tuina massage, and Chinese herbal medicine can help promote neuroplasticity and enhance mobility.
Stroke prevention is also of great importance and is an integral aspect of TCM-based treatment strategies.
