Acute Exhaustion State

treating with TCM

An acute state of exhaustion is a temporary but intense physical and mental fatigue. It often occurs after periods of high professional, emotional, or physical strain and can significantly impact both daily life and performance.

Typical symptoms include persistent tiredness, concentration problems, lack of motivation, headaches, muscle pain, and increased irritability. Sleep disturbances or feelings of being overwhelmed are also common. In some cases, accompanying symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, or digestive issues may occur.

An acute state of exhaustion can be caused by a variety of factors, including short-term stress, overexertion or underexertion, dehydration, or anemia.

Due to the fact that an acute state of exhaustion can be caused by very different factors, treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine must be tailored to the diagnosed syndrome. In general, an acute state of exhaustion is not always the result of a generalized deficiency. In cases of underexertion, a sedentary lifestyle can develop. In such situations, the person often engages in reduced physical activity and consumes more energy than they can burn. As a result, according to Chinese medicine, dampness and phlegm accumulate in the body. These two factors then block the flow of blood and Qi. If the treatment of the patient in this case were limited to a generalized buildup of blood and Qi, it would lead to a deterioration of the patient’s health, and a chronic state of exhaustion could be a potential outcome. Therefore, an optimal treatment with Chinese herbal tea for this syndrome of acute exhaustion would involve the elimination of dampness and turbid fluids. Acupuncture is used in patients with Qi and blood stagnation to stimulate circulation.
