Cardiovascular diseases

treating with TCM

Cardiovascular diseases encompass a wide range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels and are among the most common causes of death worldwide. Coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, and cardiac insufficiency are widespread heart-related conditions. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is both one of the many causes and a consequence of various health issues.

The development of cardiovascular diseases is closely linked to lifestyle factors. Smoking, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol consumption, and genetic predisposition all play significant roles in the onset of these conditions. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of cardiovascular diseases also increase the risk. Functional heart complaints are often a manifestation of stress.

The heart holds a special place in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is considered the “ruler” of the other organs and the residence of the human spirit (Shen). In TCM, differential diagnoses are made based on concepts such as Yin and Yang, Qi, and Xue (Blood) functions. The Yang function is considered the fundamental energy required to sustain organ function. In the case of the heart, Yang includes the cardiac conduction system and the sympathetic nervous system. The Qi function refers to the heart’s pumping ability. Other organs can also influence heart function—for example, poor nutrition can impair the functions of the liver and spleen, which in turn may negatively affect the heart and circulatory system.

Therapeutic approaches such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy can help alleviate various cardiovascular symptoms.
