Stomach pain/discomfort
treating with TCM
Stomach pain (Wei Tong) refers to a type of pain that typically originates in the stomach area but can also radiate to the right or left hypochondrium (under the ribcage).
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the causes and mechanisms leading to stomach pain are diverse. One of the most important contributing factors is diet, particularly the quality and quantity of food consumed. Frequent intake of devitalized or nutrient-poor foods, or engaging in strict dieting, often leads to dull stomach pain accompanied by fatigue. On the other hand, rich meals combined with a sedentary lifestyle may lead to food stagnation, resulting in acid reflux, bloating, belching, and bad breath.
Moreover, a diet that is unbalanced according to the principles of Chinese nutrition—and the conditions under which food is consumed (e.g., eating too fast, late at night, irregular mealtimes, or eating while emotionally unsettled)—can weaken or block the Pi (Spleen) and Wei (Stomach) Qi, or lead to stagnation of Cold or Heat. Typical symptoms include acid reflux, belching (loud or silent), fullness, burning or cramping stomach pain, cold sensation with intense pain, vomiting, and accompanying signs such as dry mouth or frontal headaches.
Emotional strain, such as stress, anger, or worry, is another major cause of stomach pain in TCM, often described as “emotions affecting the stomach.” These conditions can lead to Gan (Liver) Qi stagnation, obstructing the flow of Wei (Stomach) Qi, or to a weakness of the Pi (Spleen), resulting in symptoms like stomach pain with belching, nausea, or even diarrhea.
Other contributing factors may include constitutional weakness, overwork, physical overexertion, or side effects of conventional medications. A precise syndrome differentiation, which includes the examination of the tongue and pulse, is essential to apply the appropriate acupuncture and herbal treatments. This ensures that conditions of deficiency or excess are not aggravated, but rather that deficiencies are supported and stagnations are resolved.
