Herniated Disc / Disc Damage

Intervertebral discs are located between the vertebrae of the spine and act as shock absorbers, enabling mobility and cushioning the spine’s load. A disc injury can occur due to wear and tear, improper loading, or trauma, often resulting in back pain and limited mobility.

A herniated disc occurs when the inner, gel-like nucleus of a disc protrudes through the outer fibrous ring. This can exert pressure on surrounding nerves, causing severe pain, numbness, or even paralysis. The lumbar spine (lower back) and cervical spine (neck) are particularly affected, as these areas are exposed to significant stress. The causes of a disc injury or herniation are often a combination of aging, poor posture, lack of movement, and prolonged overload of the spine, such as heavy lifting or sitting for long periods in poor posture. Genetic factors can also play a role.

Typical symptoms include back pain that may radiate into the legs or arms, muscle weakness, tingling or numbness, and in severe cases, reduced mobility or dysfunctions like bladder or bowel control problems. Pain can be acute or chronic, localized or radiating.

While a disc injury often progresses gradually over time, a herniated disc can occur suddenly and cause significant discomfort.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these pains are primarily attributed to the stagnation of blood and Qi. A herniated disc leads to a structural change in the body. As a result, Qi and blood in the meridians and blood vessels can no longer flow smoothly. TCM has a central saying that describes this situation: “Bu tong zi tong, tong zi bu tong”, which translates as: “No free flow leads to pain; free flow leads to painlessness.” Based on this principle, the goal is to restore the flow in cases of herniated discs. This is achieved through the use of Chinese herbal teas that promote blood and Qi circulation. Especially in the first 10 weeks after an injury, regular acupuncture sessions should focus on both local and distal points to reduce pain.
