Irritable stomach
treating with TCM
Functional dyspepsia (also known as “nervous stomach”) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are among the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders. They occur without any detectable organic cause, yet can significantly affect quality of life. Functional dyspepsia typically presents with symptoms in the upper digestive tract, such as a feeling of fullness, stomach pain, nausea, or acid reflux. IBS, on the other hand, primarily affects the lower digestive tract and is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation.
The incidence of IBS and functional dyspepsia is increasing worldwide, which may be related to modern dietary habits, stress, and environmental factors. Women are affected more frequently than men.
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a common cause of functional dyspepsia or IBS is a disturbance in Liver Qi. Due to stress-induced internal tension, the Qi can no longer flow smoothly through the body, which impairs digestion. A sensation of fullness accompanied by bloating may also indicate a Spleen Qi deficiency. Determining the exact cause requires individual diagnosis.
Acupuncture and moxibustion can help restore harmony in the body’s “center” and relieve abdominal tension. Herbal therapy supports the mobilization of substances in the stomach and intestines so that they can be excreted, thereby breaking the stagnation in digestion. This approach helps reestablish and harmonize the flow of Qi. At the same time, warming and relaxing herbal formulas are used to soothe both the gastrointestinal system and the psyche.
Chinese dietary therapy focuses on the digestibility and quality of food, aiming to support healthy digestion through individualized nutritional guidance.
