Lumbalgia
treating with TCM
Lumbalgia, also known as lower back pain or lumbago, is a widespread health issue that typically affects the lumbar region of the spine. The term “lumbalgia” is derived from the Latin lumbus (meaning “loin”) and algos (meaning “pain”), and refers to pain occurring in the lower back area. It usually presents as sudden, often severe stabbing pain — commonly referred to as a “lumbago”. However, lumbago is not a disease itself, but rather a symptom that can have various underlying causes.
Symptoms of lumbalgia range from mild discomfort to intense, stabbing, or pulling pain in the lower back. Depending on the cause and severity, the pain may vary in intensity and may radiate to the legs or buttocks. When the sciatic nerve is involved, this is often referred to as sciatica. In some cases, lumbalgia can also be accompanied by limited mobility and a higher risk of further injuries.
The causes of lumbalgia are diverse and can include both acute and chronic conditions. It often occurs following sudden movements such as lifting, bending, or twisting. Poor posture—especially during prolonged sitting or standing—can also trigger lumbalgia. The cause may be as simple as a muscle strain, but it can also involve a disc bulge (protrusion) or a herniated disc (prolapse). In such cases, lumbalgia may be accompanied by sensory and motor deficits in the legs and feet.
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), back pain can be attributed to various organ systems or functional pathways. Acute lower back pain is often believed to result from the invasion of wind, cold, dampness, or heat, which can lead to a stagnation of Qi (energy) and Xue (blood) in the meridians.
Pain can be effectively treated with acupuncture, individualized herbal prescriptions, and local moxibustion therapy. Additionally, Chinese dietary therapy can make a valuable contribution to restoring the body’s balance and strengthening the back over the long term.
