Bronchial Asthma

treating with TCM

Bronchial asthma is a chronic respiratory disease in which the bronchi become inflamed and constricted, leading to recurrent breathing difficulties. These inflammations and narrowing of the airways make it hard to get air into and out of the lungs, resulting in characteristic symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest.

The exact causes of asthma are not fully understood, but genetic factors play a major role. People with a family history of asthma or other allergic conditions, such as hay fever or eczema, are more likely to be affected. Environmental factors such as pollen, dust, mold, air pollution, or even tobacco smoke can trigger asthma or worsen symptoms.

Asthma is a very individualized condition, as triggers and the severity of symptoms can vary from person to person. In some people, asthma worsens due to physical exertion, cold air, or stressful situations, while in others, allergic reactions or infections are the main triggers.

Asthma occurs in episodes, where symptoms can suddenly and often worsen without warning. In most cases, symptoms are less pronounced between episodes but can return at any time.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), wheezing (“Chuan”) refers to difficult breathing, mouth breathing, and the use of accessory respiratory muscles. Asthma develops from an acute situation in which pathogenic factors like wind, cold, and dampness impair lung function. In a chronic condition, the kidneys and lungs are in a state of deficiency. The lungs lower Qi to the kidneys during inhalation, and the kidneys send Qi upward to the lungs during exhalation. Asthma patients have difficulty fully exhaling, indicating that the kidneys do not have enough energy. Herbal therapy and acupuncture help to restore Qi to the kidneys, while pathogenic factors are expelled through treatment. For patients, performing targeted breathing exercises is important to improve both inhalation and exhalation. Practices like Qi Gong and Tai Chi support this process.
